Playing Creative Director with Van Brauge Watches

While taking good photos is important, the entire process leading up to a shoot is just as imperative, if not more so. When designer and watchmaker Max Van Brauge needed marketing photography for his new watch brand, we acted as his creative director, art director, and producer for the photo shoot. We love playing those parts whenever the opportunities arise. Impressed by our work and our ability to play these roles beyond just photography, we worked out a compelling campaign that would stay true to his brand, get all the shots he needed, and still stay within his budget and time frame.

“…the entire process leading up a shoot is just as imperative, if not more so.”

Max needed three different kinds of images for his initial launch; product shots, lifestyle shots, and still-life shots. We created mood-boards and narrowed down the vision for the shoot.

Max has decades of experience as a watch maker. He worked as a product developer for numerous major watch brands, but visual marketing was not his expertise. We went through extensive branding conversations and identified his target market as well as their buying habits. This step was crucial in discovering Van Brauge’s new look and feel.

After completing our mood-boards, the production work could begin. We had to find a model, a stylist, a make-up artist, scout various locations, coordinate it all, take care of any logistics and then finally execute the photoshoot in an eight-day span.

While production is always a bit hectic, having a great team helped tremendously and we were able to creatively problem-solve any hiccups. When the shoot was all wrapped up it was time to start on the retouching. It took 3 people 3 weeks to get all the work done. Here is a time-lapse of our retouching work:

In the end, the client was fantastically impressed with the results. We are currently strategizing future marketing efforts for Van Brauge and are excited for their impending success!!!
